Open Science

The Psychology Research Institute (INPSY) supports open access in science, known as Open Science.

As part of this approach, we strive to ensure that the results of our research are easily accessible to both other experts and the general public, and that research is conducted in a transparent manner. We therefore collaborate with Masaryk University’s Center for Open Science to achieve the widest possible sharing of scientific results in the form of scholarly articles and research data.

Open Access

Open Access (OA) is a principle committed to providing free, open, and immediate access to all scientific articles, data, and other resources. In this way, we promote transparency, knowledge sharing, and the maximum utilization of scientific information on a global scale.
Open access to scientific information increases the reach of research, enables faster innovation, and stimulates further discoveries. At INPSY, we have long supported the principles of Open Science, including the principle of Open Access.

Why isn’t everything publicly accessible?

Restrictions on Open Access arise for various reasons, including economic constraints, traditions, and concerns about quality. Public access is most often purchased by the institution where the publication originated, and the average cost is approximately $3,000 (70,000 CZK). These fees are typically included in grant applications, but this increases the project’s cost and can be a disadvantage in grant competitions.

If, for example, a 3-year social sciences project funded by the GA ČR Standard program (average budget of 4.5 million CZK, 2023) produces 7 OA publications, the access fees account for 11% of the budget. The Open Access principle thus also has the pitfall of potentially favoring larger and wealthier institutions.

Open Reproducible Research

No description

At INPSY, we have long been actively committed to promoting reproducibility and a transparent research process. A list of publications that share their materials and are pre-registered can be found below.

Both principles aim to publish not only the final text of studies but also materials and information about the research process. Good research practice recommends that researchers preregister* their hypotheses/expected results, methods, and analytical plan before working with collected data. During the study’s development and/or after its publication, it is further recommended to share materials such as the data used, analytical scripts, protocols, etc.

Pre-registration serves several purposes: 1) author teams clearly communicate their objectives and procedures, 2) they clearly distinguish between the confirmatory and exploratory aspects of the study, 3) they allow for community feedback prior to publication, 4) they enable peer-reviewed journals to accept a study based on its original idea rather than on “favorable” results, and 5) they prevent the phenomenon of HARKing (hypothesizing after the results are known).

We also adhere as closely as possible to the Open Data principle—free access to research data, which can thus be verified at any time and the research replicated. The Open Data principle takes into account both primary data from studies and other information, such as analytical scripts and procedures.

The goal of Open Data is to increase the transparency of the scientific process, enable the reproducibility of results, and stimulate further research and innovation. However, this approach also has its opponents, who sometimes argue that data is the property of institutions. On this topic, we recommend a summary published by our colleague Jaroslav Gottfried in Československá psychologie.

Data is usually stored in online repositories; a popular example is the Open Science Framework.

Below is a list of works that are either published under an Open Access license, have been pre-registered by us, or have accompanying data sets available. Works that we have published under an Open Access license—meaning they are freely available—are marked in the list with an open padlock icon . All published information is subject to the international CC BY 4.0 license—meaning the work is freely distributable and modifiable for both commercial and non-commercial purposes, provided the authorship of the original work is acknowledged. Names highlighted in bold in the list indicate INPSY membership or affiliation with the Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University, within the author team.

INPSY also supports the publication of the professional journal Testfórum, where you can find freely accessible peer-reviewed articles and reviews of psychodiagnostic methods.
